SOBAR (not quite SOBER) The Society Of Brown Ale Revivalists is currently in formation. Sign up now! No, actually, you don't need to sign up - you become a member automatically as soon as you drink some brown ale and enjoy it! I'm only going to deal with stuff that's available in the UK on this web page: if somebody would like to do someting similar for other countries I'd love to have a link to it. I may try to get some button badges made: design ideas please. Maybe get some tshirts printed - design ideas for that too please. To be quite honest, when I put that bit in the u.r.s. faq about brown ale it wasn't too serious: I hadn't had any for years. But since then I've tried several and the decent ones really are rather nice. Despite my local Tesco attempting to sidetrack me by deciding to stock Sam Smith's Oatmeal Stout, I've decided to launch SOBAR and its central document, the IcePie Book of Brown Ale. Like the I-Spy books, this will be a list of brown ales which you can tick off as you find them. A bit like train spotting, but with more point to it. A point: Is a Burton Ale or a Scotch Ale a type of Brown? According to an old homebrew book I have they share certain characteristics, particularly the type of malt used. Opinions please.
